How to block UPI credit card usage without blocking the credit card?

Santosh Kumar

It is possible to block your UPI credit card use without blocking the entirety of your credit card, depending on your issuer as well as the UPI application being used. Most banks have created bespoke functionalities for digital payment channels due to the fact that UPI on credit cards is still a relatively new phenomenon in India. Consequently, you aren’t required to block either one of your physical or online card payment options for credit cards, nor are you required to block use of your card at a point-of-sale terminal (POS) to stop spending funds linked via UPI to your credit card.

The first step would be to determine what card control settings your bank has available through its mobile application and/or internet banking portal. A number of issuers have built-in functionality to enable toggles for online transactions, contactless payment, international use, and UPI-linked credit card transactions. Should your bank have a specific toggle for UPI-related credit card transactions, you may disable that functionality.

If this option isn’t available on your bank app or internet banking portal, you may still remove your credit card from the UPI application itself. The majority of UPI applications provide users with the ability manage their linked accounts/cards by allowing users to either remove or deactivate credit cards as a payment source for UPI transactions without affecting their ability to utilise their credit card for swiping at POS terminals, making online purchases, or subscribing to recurring payment plans.

Another way to restrict UPI payments on your credit card is to contact the customer service department of your bank. Many banks can place channel-level blocks on your account manually. You may want to specifically state that you want to disable UPI usage but allow for domestic card transactions to remain active. Blocking UPI payments is advantageous when you want to avoid misusing UPI or to reduce the risk of falling victim to a UPI scam, or if you want to develop a strong sense of discipline in managing your budget.

You should know that blocking UPI payment on your credit card does not cancel your card or affect your credit history; it only temporarily restricts one specific method of making payments. All your other payment obligations (including existing dues, billing cycles and repayment obligations) will remain in place. All existing balances owed to the bank must still be paid in accordance with the due dates set forth by the bank.

Blocking UPI usage on credit cards is a common choice for many users because UPI transactions are perceived to be casual and quick, and this makes it easier for users to feel as though their purchase was not real.

You can always re-enable the Card feature later, as most banks will allow you to do so immediately via the app or a simple customer support request. The effect of disabling the usage of a UPI-based card will not be permanent for your account.
