Why does a UPI credit card payment fail even when limit is available?

Santosh Kumar

Users often get confused when they attempt to pay for goods/services via UPI, and their card has sufficient credit to cover the charge, but the transaction fails. This is a common occurrence, and this doesn't necessarily indicate a problem with the card; UPI Credit Card payments are a multi-system way of paying, involving the Payment Network (for example, Visa or MasterCard), Issuing Bank, UPI Platform and Merchant Payment Gateway. A failure can occur at any point across these systems if one does not process the transaction correctly.

The most common explanation for this failure relates to merchants. While the majority of merchants support UPI and accept payments from Bank Accounts, only some merchants have enabled UPI via a Credit Card. If they have not enabled this on their website, the transaction will fail even if the User's Limit is available.

Internal Restrictions set by the Bank are another reason why the User's Limit may not be available to complete the transaction. Some Issuers Block transactions that fall under certain Category Types and, as such, are unable to process them through their system (for example, Peer To Peer transfers, Wallet Loadings, etc.). These restrictions are intended to limit Risk and prevent Fraudulent Activity. In many cases, the User's Limit may technically be available to make the payment, but the Bank does not allow its Customers to use that Limit for the above-mentioned types of payments.

Transaction limits are another possible cause for a failed payment. Credit card-based UPI payments have caps for how much can be paid in a day and how much can be paid at each time. If you have hit either of these limits, you will not be able to make additional payments. The transaction limits are independent of your credit limit, which is why your balance may show as being available.

Another reason UPI transactions fail is due to temporary technical problems. UPI payment processing relies on constant digital communication between the banks, the UPI network and the payment processor(s). If one of these connections is delayed, times out, or becomes unsynchronised with the others, the transaction will fail even if all of the requirements for the transaction have been satisfied. If this happens, you should continue trying later.

Many banks establish security systems that prevent transactions from being processed. If a transaction does not conform to your historical spending habits, geographical location, or frequency of payment, the bank may block the transaction to protect against potential fraud. While it does protect the consumer against fraud, it may also prevent legitimate transactions from being completed.

Some transactions fail due to incomplete setup or inadequate information. For example, UPI credit card payments require activation of the credit card account and a separate UPI PIN for each account. If you have not completed either of these actions or if your app is outdated, payments may not go through.

Additionally, while it's very convenient to have money available to spend, there is no guarantee that every purchase will qualify. Banks perform many different types of risk assessment, not just setting limits on transaction approvals. In doing so, banks are protecting both the account holder and their entire financial institution. By being aware of the numerous factors involved in approving transactions, you can reduce frustration and avoid unnecessary panic over transaction failures.

If you experience transaction failures on a frequent basis, it is a good idea to reach out to either your bank or the UPI app provider for guidance. Often, issues can be resolved by simply reviewing card controls, looking into whether a specific merchant is compatible with your card, and/or adjusting transaction settings.
